Walking The Path of The Mindful Leader

I really like principles because they make it easy for me to implement positive changes into my life.

A principle is simply a rule or belief that governs our personal behaviour.

They represent the morals, ideals and standards that we set for ourselves as we endeavour to bring our best selves to the world.

To become a better version of ourselves we need to challenge our current beliefs, identify the rules that are no longer serving us, and to introduce key principles that will take us to the next level.

The key to walking the path of a Mindful Leader is to choose the right principles.

In The 5 Stages of Mindful Leadership I introduced you to a total of 15 principles (3 for each of the 5 stages).

Looking back through my career, these are the principles that have made the largest positive impact.

Here’s a recap of The 15 Principles of Mindful Leadership:






Establish yourself as an expert in your field.



Develop a positive mental attitude and a strong work ethic.



Take personal responsibility by doing the right thing and build a reputation based on trust.



Learn how to ethically influence your co-workers (boss, peers, others outside department) to get the job done.



Learn how to embrace challenges and bounce back from failure.



Uncover the personal productivity secrets and time management skills that will take you to the next level.



To respond quickly and be agile in your approach to solving conflicting priorities.



Get to know the strengths and motivations of each of your team members and help them succeed.



Develop the skills of giving effective feedback to keep everyone on course.


Model The Way

Walk your talk by embracing the 5 Stages of Mindful Leadership and the 5 Habits of Mindfulness.


Ethos / Character

Define and embrace the mental and moral qualities distinctive to you as an individual and your tribe (team / organization).


Tribal Culture

Use your skills of influence to move your tribe (team / organization) from a ‘me’ mindset to a ‘we’ mindset.



Create a vision that you are passionate about and is aligned with your purpose.



Develop a strategy to achieve your vision that aligns with the goals of the people closest to you.



Be authentic while implementing your strategy and live a life without regrets.

Your Mindful Leadership challenge

Your Mindful Leadership challenge  for today is to select a principle that you going to commit to embrace.

Once you’ve integrated this principle into your life, then choose the next. Repeat until you have integrated all of the principles.

Here’s a quick template that you can use to help you follow through.

Why is this principle important?: [why is this principle important to you?]

What do I need do to live this principle?: [list 3 to 5 behaviours or actions]

How can I measure it or how will I know I’m living it?: [what results will you notice?]

What ritual can I introduce to maintain it?: [what’s daily ritual can you introduce into your routine to ensure you are living this principle?]

Integrating a principle, just like a habit, can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 months (depending on the complexity) to make it part of your regular routine.
